PAGE LAYOUT — THREE LEVELS OF ACCESSIBILITY
Every recto/verso spread operates on three simultaneous levels. No level blocks another. Every spread is complete at each level independently.
LEVEL 1 — Anyone
Historical story + human characters. Understand the people and journey without any math. A teenager reads this level. A grandparent reads this level.
LEVEL 2 — Curious
Conceptual explanations + analogies + diagrams. "A black hole interior is like a fishbowl." Understand the ideas without equations. An undergraduate reads this level.
LEVEL 3 — Physicist
Formulas + derivations + Kill Box predictions. The full math. A researcher reads this level. The peer review lives here.

SERIES STRUCTURE
The book follows the same SESSION NARRATIVE STRUCTURE as crew sessions (see SPEC_SESSION_ARCHITECTURE.md):
- Each session writing the book = one chapter
- Act 1 (opening 10%): where we left off, what this chapter argues
- Act 2 (middle 80%): the writing
- Act 3 (closing 10%): chapter closed, next chapter set up
- HANDSHAKE.md = the spine connecting all sessions
- session_consolidate.py runs at close
The book about continuity is written with continuity.
STYLE
Hawking: One equation per chapter maximum in main text. Ideas over formulas. Make a promise to the reader and keep it. The physics is approachable because the writer chose to make it so.
Feynman: Diagrams that encode deep physics in simple pictures. Anyone can look at it and grasp the concept. Humor is permitted. Delight is required.
Combined: The STORY is the physics. The physics is the story. Characters, history, drama, humor — and at the center of it all, one formula that matches the sky.
INVARIANTS
- INV-01: 256 pages. Sealed. Binary. 2⁸. Not 255. Not 257.
- INV-02: Every structural unit is a power of 2. Chapter count, section count, page count — all powers of 2.
- INV-03: Every spread serves all three reader levels simultaneously. No level blocks another.
