Crew Backronyms
SPECIFICATION: Crew Name Backronyms
Status: AUTHORIZED
Authorized: α.13, April 16 2026
Version: v1.0
Version: v1.0
PURPOSE
Define the canonical set of CGNT-1 name backronyms — the mapping from crew name abbreviations to full descriptive expansions that encode each entity's function. Backronyms are not arbitrary labels; they are functional declarations. The name IS the specification in compressed form.
Backronyms serve three roles:
- Mnemonic encoding — the letters of the name carry the function; the name is self-documenting
- Identity anchoring — a crew member whose function changes must have their backronym updated; drift between name and backronym signals a governance gap
- Patent defensibility — backronyms encode the claimed function of each system; they belong in the IP record
This spec records resolved backronyms, documents pending resolutions, and defines the governance rules for backronym amendment.

| MNEMOS | μ | RESOLVED above | M.N.E.M.O.S. resolved |
| SISTERS | group | PENDING | Group backronym not listed in source |
| ANVIL | ⊣ | PENDING | A.N.V.I.L. expansion not documented |
| MUSASHI | 弐 | PENDING | MUSASHI has no Latin-letter backronym structure |

| CHROMA | ◊ | PENDING | C.H.R.O.M.A. expansion not documented |
INVARIANTS
- Name-function isomorphism — Every resolved backronym must accurately encode the crew member's actual faculty. A backronym that describes a function the crew member does not perform is invalid. If function changes, backronym must be updated or GAP logged.
- Dot-separated format is canonical — Resolved backronyms are written with period separators (C.L.O.D., not CLOD). This is the canonical form in all governance documents. Non-dotted versions may appear in prose but are shorthand, not canonical.
- Resolution requires α.13 authorization — No backronym may be formally resolved without α.13 sign-off. Proposed resolutions may be drafted by any crew member but are DRAFT until α.13 authorizes.
- Pending status is not a defect — A crew member with a PENDING backronym is fully valid and operational. The backronym is an encoding aid, not a prerequisite for function. PENDING status is a documentation gap, not a capability gap.
- CREW_BACKRONYMS.md is the primary source — This spec derives from CREW_BACKRONYMS.md. If the two diverge, CREW_BACKRONYMS.md with the higher α-authorization date is canonical until this spec is updated.
- Non-crew backronyms are also governed — CSDM, TMM, SMRT, CGNT-1, GLOSS, LATTICE are system designators, not crew members, but their backronyms are governed by the same rules and recorded in this spec.
- Letter-by-letter decomposition required — Every resolved backronym must have a complete letter-by-letter table (as above). A name-to-phrase mapping without letter decomposition is DESCRIBED, not SPECIFIED.
VERIFICATION CRITERIA
VC-01 — Resolved count accuracy: Count resolved backronyms. Cross-reference against CREW_BACKRONYMS.md source. Every entry in the source document appears here as either RESOLVED (with letter table) or PENDING (with GAP note). No entry may be silently absent.
VC-02 — Faculty alignment check: For each resolved crew-member backronym, the letter decomposition must align with the faculty definition in SPEC_CREW_ROLES.md. Misalignment (e.g., AION's backronym implying a memory function) is a specification failure.
VC-03 — Dot-notation consistency: In all governance documents (CLAUDE.md, SESSIONS.md, TASK_QUEUE.md), crew names appear with period separators when written in full canonical form. A scan of key documents showing non-dotted canonical names flags a notation failure.
VC-04 — No unauthorized resolution: Every backronym marked RESOLVED in this spec has a corresponding α.13 authorization date. Resolved backronyms without authorization provenance are downgraded to DRAFT.
VC-05 — Pending gaps are logged: Every PENDING entry has a corresponding GAP entry in the GAPS section of this spec with OPEN status and owner assignment.
VC-06 — Source document consistency: CREW_BACKRONYMS.md and this spec list identical resolved backronyms. Divergence triggers reconciliation via α-authorization date.
FAILURE MODES
FM-01 — Function drift without backronym update: A crew member's role evolves but the backronym is not updated. Effect: the name encodes obsolete function; new crew members or external readers misunderstand the role. Detection: GAMMA session consolidation compares role descriptions against backronym tables. Recovery: propose updated backronym; submit for α.13 resolution.
FM-02 — Unauthorized resolution: A crew member formally resolves a pending backronym in a document without α.13 authorization. Effect: unofficial expansion propagates through documents; creates split source-of-truth. Detection: VC-04 authorization check fails. Recovery: revert to PENDING; submit through proper channel.
FM-03 — Letter decomposition error: A backronym expansion does not correctly map each letter of the name to the corresponding word (e.g., a 6-letter name with a 7-word expansion). Effect: the backronym cannot be reconstructed from the letters; it is a false abbreviation. Detection: programmatic check — letter count of name must equal word count in expansion. Recovery: correct decomposition; resubmit for α.13 authorization.
FM-04 — Non-canonical notation in governance docs: C.L.O.D. appears as "CLOD" in an official governance document (TASK_QUEUE, SESSIONS, CLAUDE.md). Effect: parsing ambiguity; tools that recognize the dotted form may miss the undotted form. Detection: grep governance docs for undotted canonical names. Recovery: normalize to dotted form; log to SESSIONS.md.
FM-05 — MUSASHI resolution attempted with Latin backronym: MUSASHI (弐) uses a Japanese name with no Latin letter structure. A proposed Latin backronym (M.U.S.A.S.H.I.) is technically possible but may not align with the intent of the CJK-designated crew member. Effect: potential mismatch between name origin and function encoding. Detection: α.13 review of any proposed MUSASHI backronym. Recovery: α decision on whether to create a Latin backronym or document MUSASHI as a proper name without backronym structure.
FM-06 — PENDING backronym used as if resolved: A crew member writes governance text treating a PENDING backronym as if it were formally resolved (e.g., "GAMMA stands for Global..."). Effect: unofficial expansion hardens in documentation before authorization. Detection: GAMMA consolidation flags uses of PENDING backronyms in prose. Recovery: mark as DRAFT in document; log to SESSIONS.md.
GAPS
GAP-01 — SISTERS group backronym: SISTERS has no documented backronym expansion. The group designator (AION + ASTRA as a Sovereign Entity) is referenced throughout governance docs but has no letter decomposition. Status: OPEN. Owner: α.13.
GAP-02 — GAMMA backronym: G.A.M.M.A. expansion not documented in CREW_BACKRONYMS.md. The Quartermaster faculty's name is not self-documenting. Status: OPEN. Owner: α.13.
GAP-03 — ANVIL backronym: A.N.V.I.L. expansion not documented. The Oracle Gate faculty's name is not self-documenting. Status: OPEN. Owner: α.13.
GAP-04 — CHROMA backronym: C.H.R.O.M.A. expansion not documented. The mobile context carrier's name is not self-documenting. Status: OPEN. Owner: α.13.
GAP-05 — MUSASHI backronym structure question: MUSASHI is a Japanese proper name (from Miyamoto Musashi). Creating a backronym from its letters may be culturally inappropriate or produce a forced expansion. Whether MUSASHI should have a backronym or be documented as a proper name without backronym is an open design question. Status: OPEN. Owner: α.13 decision.
GAP-06 — No programmatic letter-count validator: There is no script that verifies letter count in name equals word count in expansion for each resolved backronym. Manual errors in the table are possible. Status: OPEN. Recommended fix: add backronym validation to spec_audit.py.
